Disney Descendants Mal Halloween Costume

Disney channel on Sept. 19, 2015. The original movie focuses on Queen Belle (Beauty and the Beast) who is married to the King Adam (Beast) and their quest to unite their kingdom with the other kingdoms in Auradon. Separated from Auradon is the Isle of the Lost where all of the bad children and Disney villains have been banished to live in exile.

The movie begins with an introduction to Belle and King Adam’s son Prince Ben, who wants to invite the children of the villains, who live on the Isle of the Lost to stay in Auradon. Prince Ben is an idealist who believes that the children of the villains deserve a second chance, and if they just have love, won’t be “rotten to the core.” One of the most important scenes in the movie Descendants is when the children of the villains, Carlos (who is the son of Cruella De Vil; 101 Dalmatians) Jay (son of Jafar from Aladdin), Evie (daughter of the Evil Queen from Snow White) and Mal (daughter of Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty) sing their hit song “Rotten to the Core.” You may see the video below.



The “wicked” children are allowed to go to school at Auradon and leave their parents behind. Maleficent plans for her daughter Mal to steal the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand, so that she can give it to Maleficent. Maleficent intends to use the wand to remove the curse over the Isle of the Lost. Of course, Maleficent would regain all power and become the ruler over all the kingdoms.


 The children attend the school, but then begin to deal with issues of their conscience. Most importantly, the children aren’t sure if they want to continue in their “wicked” ways, or if they want to choose good. Away from their parents influence, the children begin to see that other children live differently. They also see examples of wholesome, loving parental relationships and begin to realize that they haven’t been brought up in the best environments.

Mal plans to help her mother steal the magic wand, and they use Evie’s magic mirror to locate it. Once they discover its locations, a series of missteps occur and they are unable to retrieve it. Mal also begins to doubt whether she wants to truly be bad. The wicked, children of the villains begin to experience some good things. horrible fear of dogs taught by his mother Cruella, learns that not only are dogs not evil, but they are also cute, cuddly and friendly. Evie learns some lessons in self-esteem, after she falls for “Chad Charming” who is Prince Charming’s and Cinderella’s son.

 At first, it appears that Chad Charming is a good guy, but he is simply using Evie to get her magic mirror. Evie has to realize that she has good qualities and is worthy of respect. She is a talented seamstress and is smart. Chad Charming pulls a stunt that results in Evie losing her magic mirror. Unable to use the mirror to get help with a test, she discovers that she can get good grades on her own. She passed the test and learned a valuable lesson in self confidence.

 Mal is intent on stealing the magic wand and befriends Jane, the Fairy Godmother’s daughter in order to get it. Jane is a shy, insecure girl who wants to be beautiful. Mal uses her own magic to change Jane’s appearance and Jane instantly gets a new boost of confidence. Additionally, some of the other girls in Auradon ask Mal to help them with their beauty makeovers. Prince Ben continues to show the villain children kindness and invites them to attend a special event: his coronation. Mal discovers that the Fairy Godmother will be at the coronation and will use her magic wand to bestow a blessing upon Prince Ben. Mal sees this as an opportunity to steal the wand. When Prince Ben invites her and the other kids to the coronation, she asks if they may be seated up front. The truth is, Mal is seeking a prime location in order to steal the Fairy Godmother’s wand. Prince Ben replies that only his parents and girlfriend Audrey are allowed to sit up front. Audrey, it turns out, is the daughter of Aurora and Prince Phillip. This means that her family and Mal’ family have negative history together. It was Maleficent who cursed Aurora’s mother (Audrey’s grandmother) to put Aurora in a 100-year sleep.

 After Mal learns that only family and Audrey are allowed up front during the coronation, she devises a plan to become Prince Ben’s girlfriend. Mal uses magic to enchant a batch of cookies and put a spell on Prince Ben.  The kids attend a tourney match, where Jay is playing and excels and Mal successfully spelled Prince Ben with the cookie. Prince Ben declares his love for Mal and rejection of Audrey through song after the game. Prince Ben asks Mal on a date, and during the date, Mal begins to wonder if she may have true feelings of love for Prince Ben. This is something she isn’t used to

and it is scary and unfamiliar for her. Ben goes swimming and invites Mal to join him, but she declined, stating she couldn’t swim. After a while, Prince Ben failed to emerge and Mal began to panic. She even went into the water looking for him. Unbeknownst to Mal, the enchanted waters removed the effects of Mal’s love spell and Ben was completely of his own free will and mind. Prince Ben had fallen in love with Mal and continued the charade without her knowing the spell had been broken.

The school held a parents day but the villain kids’ parents weren’t allowed to come to the school. Instead, they had a video chat with their parents, and once again realized that their parents were not only villains, but self-absorbed and showed very little concern or care for their children. It is during the parent’s day that Ben introduces Mal to his parents, who are very concerned and troubled that he has shown affection for the daughter of a villain. Things take a terrible turn when Audrey’s grandmother meets Mal. She recognized her for her resemblance to Maleficent and becomes outraged that she was in Auradon. Things got out of control and Evie panicked and sprayed Chad Charming with a magical, sleeping potion. The parent’s day was so disastrous, that the other students wanted the villain kids to leave. School becomes a dreary place for the villain children and the other children begin to tease and ignore them. Mal became angry and reversed her beauty spell on Jane and the other girls.

After suffering a bit of bullying from the other kids, the villain children determine that they will steal the magic wand during the coronation. Even though Mal planned to steal the magic wand, she still struggled with her feelings for Prince Ben. She decided that the right thing to do would be to break the love spell before the coronation. Little did she know that the love spell was already broken. Prince Ben declared his true feelings for Mal and she is even more confused.

 During the coronation, Jane steals her mother’s magic wand, because she wants to be beautiful. Mal is confused about what to do, and gets the wand from Jane. At this point, all confusion takes place. Jane inadvertently broke the barrier that isolated the Isle of the Lost. Maleficent was free and on her way to Auradon to get the wand. Mal had the wand and contemplated whether she should give it to

her mother or choose to be with Ben. If she chose Ben, she would be choosing love and goodness over her wicked ways. She would be turning against her mother.

Maleficent showed up at the coronation and put everyone under a spell. Mal and Maleficent battled and ultimately Mal reclaimed the magic wand and her mother was transformed first into a giant dragon, then shrunk into a small reptile. Mal and the villain kids chose love and goodness. Order was restored and Prince Ben and Mal were happy. The movie ended with everyone dancing at the coronation ball.

The movie Descendants teaches children a number of lessons but most importantly it tells children and teenagers that even if their parents are bad, they don’t have to be bad too. No one is born bad and no one has to live a destiny that others decide for them.
